THE BUZZ: Parents: It's time to talk to your kids about "smurfing." This CGI update to the Saturday morning staple with a cast straight out of a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards show stands a good chance of reviving the once-smurfy trend of randomly replacing every word possible with variations of the word "smurf". But, don't look for it to end the flood of '80s flashback films (we kinda hoped The A-Team would do that). Remakes such as Footloose, Conan and Red Dawn are smurfing up all over.

No disrespect to the inventiveness of its predecessors, but the idea of watching a suspension bridge undo itself in 3D is the first time we've felt legitimately scared by an FD premise. Keeping the project relatively celebrity-free is commendable, perhaps an acknowledgment that storytelling is the star here. Said differently, bringing Winnie, Eeyore, et al. back into theaters in classical fashion could be construed as an indication that Disney is aware of how poorly their non-Pixar animated movies have performed of late.
