Crazy, Stupid, Love. -- Newly single Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Despite a makeover and many new conquests, the one thing that can’t be made over is his love for his wife (Julianne), who cheated on him and thinks she wants a divorce.

THE BUZZ: Sound funny to you? Well, we hear both Carell and Gosling (playing the marriage counselor) have never been more comedic (well, Gosling has only had the chance to be creepy-funny) than in this script by getting-hot Dan Fogelman. With this cast, concept, and a major studio behind them, may we finally see the full promise of co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Bad Santa, I Love You Phillip Morris).

No disrespect to the inventiveness of its predecessors, but the idea of watching a suspension bridge undo itself in 3D is the first time we've felt legitimately scared by an FD premise. Keeping the project relatively celebrity-free is commendable, perhaps an acknowledgment that storytelling is the star here. Said differently, bringing Winnie, Eeyore, et al. back into theaters in classical fashion could be construed as an indication that Disney is aware of how poorly their non-Pixar animated movies have performed of late.
